Cyber threads are the new reality and Microsoft is making heavy investments in security solutions. Their Microsoft 365 E5 Security suite combines the following cloud security solutions:
- Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 2
- Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2*
- Microsoft Entra ID Plan 2
- Microsoft Defender for Identity
- Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps
* contains features which will be enabled at tenant level, all users need to be licensed if used. Read this article to learn more.
For SMB
Microsoft 365 E5 Security has licensing prerequisites. This means that users can only be licensed for Microsoft 365 E5 Security if they are also licensed for something else. Up to now this was either Microsoft 365 E3 or the combination of Office 365 E3 and Enterprise Mobility and Security E3. This has changed on March 5, 2025. Microsoft added Microsoft 365 Business Premium to the licensing prerequisite table. With that, SMB customers users licensed with Microsoft 365 Business Premium can now have a Microsoft 365 E5 Security licenses assigned and profit from tighter security.
