Autodesk changes licensing metric to named user

Autodesk is a global manufacturer of 3D design, engineering and entertainment software. Their software licensing was traditionally based on a per serial number basis, per device. Autodesk announced that they are going to change the licensing metric to a ‘per named user’ based model per May 7, 2020.

Per user licensing
On May 7, 2020 Autodesk is launching new subscription plans that are based on people and retiring plans based on serial numbers. This means that the each person who needs to use Autodesk software to create things, needs a per user subscription plan. This is what most Software as a Service (SaaS) suppliers use as a licensing metric.

Important dates
Autodesk offers transition plans for customers with current maintenance plans. There is a large variety of transition options. Here are the most important dates:

  • Current maintenance plans will retire on May 7, 2021 and cannot be renewed after that date.
  • Subscriptions with multi-user access to the software will retire on August 7, 2021 and cannot be further renewed.
  • The last version of the Design & Creation Suites will be released in April 2020 and the last date to renew current Suites will be April 16, 2020.

Please remember, there will not be a grace period for customer who ‘forgot’ one of those important dates. We suggest that you start planning your transition today. All terms and conditions in relation to the transition to a named user licensing subscription is published online.
