Project Online Retirement
Project Online’s legacy architecture limits further innovation, and Microsoft is shifting its investments toward Planner and Project, Dynamics 365 Project Operations, and AI solutions. In October 2025, Microsoft announced the retirement of Project Online.
Starting April 1, 2026, customers with Project Online subscriptions can no longer create new Project Online environments. As of September 30, 2026, Project Online will be fully retired. If no data export is completed before this date, all Project Online data and access will be permanently lost.

Transition Options
Microsoft recommends migrating to Planner and Project Plan 1 or Plan 3 as the modern successors to Project Online. For users with limited project management requirements, Microsoft Planner is available at no additional cost for users licensed with Microsoft 365 E3 or E5.
For customers running traditional on-premises deployments, Project 2024 LTSC (Standard and Professional) remains available and works seamlessly with Project Server Subscription Edition.
For organizations requiring advanced timesheet management and resource scheduling, Dynamics 365 Project Operations provides integrated project management capabilities combined with ERP and financial functionality.
Planner and Project Plan 5 End of Sale
Effective May 1, 2026, Planner and Project Plan 5 reached end of sale. This means the offering will no longer be available for new purchases.
Existing customers may continue to renew their subscriptions at the end of their current term and can also increase the number of licenses within an active subscription.
However, it is not possible to create new subscription variations. For example, a customer with 30 annual licenses cannot add 5 monthly term licenses for flexibility, as this would require a new subscription, which is no longer available for purchase—even for existing Planner and Project Plan 5 customers.
According to Microsoft documentation, advanced portfolio management and enterprise resource management capabilities are retired with the discontinuation of Plan 5 and will not be included in Plan 3.
